More-than-a-Meal and More-than-Art are both operated by the Idlewild Presbyterian Church on Union Avenue, very close to the Rhodes campus. More-than-a-Meal is a Thursday evening soup kitchen that begins at 5:00 PM. More-than-a-Meal is unique from the experience of serving at Souper Contact because the food is prepared ahead of time by church members. Therefore, the role of a volunteer at More-than-a-Meal is to help serve the food, but also to socialize with the patrons.
More-than-Art is a program that works partly in conjuction with More-than-a-Meal; it was started by a Rhodes student to offer a creative outlet for members of the homeless community in Memphis. More-than-Art happens every Thursday afternoon (directly before More-than-a-Meal) at 3:30 PM.
For more information about More-than-a-meal contact Katie Grills(grilka@rhodes.edu) or visit the Idlewild website.

Souper Contact began in 1988 with a group of Rhodes students who had a passion for serving the hungry and homeless. Every Tuesday afternoon a group of dedicated Rhodes students gather in the kitchen of St. John’s Methodist Church to prepare and serve a meal. Volunteers are always welcome, whether you come once or every Tuesday for the rest of your time at Rhodes! A carpool meets at 3:45 in front of the Diehl Statue, expect to be back around 6:00 PM. This is a great opportunity not only to meet and connect with members of the Memphis commuinty, but also to bond with other Rhodes students serving in the hunger and homeless area.
If you have questions contact the site coordinators, Josie Long (lonjv@rhodes.edu) and Alin Florea (floai@rhodes.edu).
