There are lots of events happening for MLK Day! BE A PART OF THE ACTION!

January 15th - Dr. MLK Birthday Celebration!

1-3 PM - BCLC Ballroom

Rhodes is celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a special birthday party on January15th. Rhodes students will lead the party with a variety of booths featuring crafts, games, and trivia related to Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement. Elementary students in the area are invited to this event along with their families for the educational and fun event!

January 15th - An Intimate Conversation with Van Jones

3:15 BCLC - Ballroom Lobby

Vna Jones will have an intimate conversation with Rhodes student and faculty about his success at combining his passion for environmental justice with effective public policy. Mr. Jones has served as the Green Jobs Administrator under the Obama administration, and is a co-founder of three successful non-profit organizations: the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Color of Change and Green For All. Van Jones is a globally recognized, award-winning pioneer in human rights and the clean-energy economy, and is the best-selling author of the definitive book on green jobs: The Green-Collor Economy.

January 17th - Service Plunge

Please sign up for various volunteer sites by stopping by the Bonner Center for Faith and Service or contact Emily Wheelwright at wheelwrighte@rhodes.edu. Students will meet at 9 a.m. to sign a nonviolence pledge and embark to various sites throughout Memphis.

January 18th - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: An Evening of Reflection

4PM - BCLC (Free and open to the public)

This program will feature a variety of responses to Dr. King’s legacy by Rhodes students, as well as from our MCS partner schools: Snowden, Springdale and Cypress.

Description: At 2pm on Sunday, December 5, runners, cyclists, and paddlers will converge at the Wolf River Pedestrian Bridge at Shelby Farms to celebrate its completion and the opening of new connections (see the link for more details).

Volunteers are needed for this event to help direct traffic, park cars, hand out information, work vendor tables, pass out water, etc. Please meet at the Visitor’s Center at 1pm to volunteer, and email Sandee Daniels (sdaniels@shelbyfarmspark.org) for more information.

Title: Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
Description: Every year, in the spirit of Thanksgiving and education, the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, one week prior to Thanksgiving. During this week over 500 schools, communities and cities throughout the nation endeavor to bring a greater awareness to the issues of hunger and homelessness.

A new initiative at Rhodes where students live off-campus in an intentional community dedicated to community service in the Binghamton neighborhood, environmentally friendly lifestyles, and life together. Initiated by 6 Rhodes seniors, the community is funded by a fellowship at Rhodes that provided funding for a backyard garden, dinners with professors and community leaders, and community events. If you are interested in applying to be a resident of the community for the 2011-2012 school year, please contact Jami King (kinjm@rhodes.edu).

There is both a 5K and a 1 mile walk/run!
